Gibson Ek High School Robotics 2024-2025

2025
Hayden Hirsch
I’ve always loved robotics and engineering, and when I heard about the club, I couldn't wait to join in 2023. This year, I've been working with the sensors, helping contructing the code, and planning for the competition. As the team captian this year, I also work on internal team communications and organization.

I joined robotics at first mostly for college applications and because I enjoyed building things so I thought robotics would be a good fit for me. Building this robot was a really fun experience for me and I really gained a lot of knowledge about robotics in general.

I’ve been interested in coding for a while, but I wasn’t sure where to start. When I heard about Gibson Ek Robotics, it seemed like a great opportunity to gain experience and meet people who knew more about software. I’ve come a long way since I joined the team, and I imagine the things I’ve learned will help me in my future career.

I joined this robotics team when I found out about the competition for this year. As someone interested in marine biology and deep sea research, underwater robotics is something that I will likely use at some point in my future. I saw this as a great opportunity to expand my social scope while also learning more about the things that support my interests!

I love mountain biking, photography, and coding. I joined robotics because I wanted to learn more about designing and building robots and the idea of an autonomous submarine sounded really interesting.

I joined the robotics team becuse I have always loved Robotic enginering. With my dream job being a robotic engineer, working with and using macanical engineering is somthing I would need to know. I saw this as a great opportunity to learn more about engineering.

I have been in robotics for almost 3 years. This year, I’m mostly working on software for the team. In the future I want to study software engineering and work in that field. I’m really excited about our team and robot.

I joined robotics because I wanted to be involved with a school community, as well as building technical and writing skills. I have done work on material research for our robot and contributed to the technical design report for the competition. I plan on staying in robotics going into senior year and I hope to be more involved on the building side.

Our Volunteer Coaches
Gibson Ek High School Robotics Coach
Jay Turney
I began volunteering at Gibson Ek High School in 2016 when my daughter was one of the very first freshmen students. When the first robotics team was formed, I became one of their mentors and have been working with the team ever since. It has been a great experience coaching the students and working with the other coaches. I especially love our philosophy; to allow all of the design and builds be done by the students. We will ask questions to try to point them in the right direction, but will not just give them the answers and will definitely not design or build the robots for them.

I'm a 25-year Microsoft veteran, having led a variety of teams in planning, developing and designing cutting-edge technology in the Xbox, Windows, Windows Phone, Windows and Azure Services, IoT, robotics, and AI. I've been infatuated with robots since I was a child, and enjoy understanding all electro-mechanical systems and control systems. My personal hobbies and professional interests all revolve around control systems: from Electric DeLoreans, to Pinball, to Robots, to Toys.
I co-started the Washington University competitive robotics team in 1997, and has been coaching, volunteering and mentoring in robotics programs since 2012. I started the Gibson Ek robotics team when the school was formed in 2016 with the vision of creating a high school robotics program where the kids do all the work and lead the club. I'm extremely proud of our rookie team for RoboSub 2024.
